Questions Comodo Premium SSL Wildcard Certificate

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A wildcard SSL certificate is the next-generation security solution that allows the main website and its subdomains to be secured by a single SSL certificate, even if the sites are on the multiple servers. It is a one-stop security solution for any website with multiple subdomains. It is a reliable and scalable certificate that unifies all subdomains security into singe certificate, saving money and making certificate management seamless.

In a nutshell, because you’ll be getting the exact same products as you would from buying direct, but at much lower prices. How is this possible? Also, we don’t consider ourselves just an SSL provider, but rather a Premium SSL Service. That’s because we have a team of SSL experts standing by ready to support your order. So, whether you are securing a domain for a large company or a small web host, you can benefit from the time and money savings of a Comodo Premium Wildcard SSL Certificate.

Key benefits of a wildcard SSL certificate:

  • It’s a cost-effective, unified solution for encrypting various subdomains on a single domain.
  • It can add the latest encryption technology to your site, with 256-bit strength encryption.
  • It is supported by all modern browsers and mobile devices.
  • It’s futureproof – any new subdomains you add will automatically be protected.

Through a single SSL certificate, you can secure as many sub-domains as you need. For example, a single wildcard SSL certificate for *.domain.com can be used for:

  • secure.domain.com
  • mail.domain.com
  • login.domain.com
  • anything.domain.com

The certificate type you choose may affect the time it takes to validate the certificate owner and issue SSL certificates. For Premium SSL Wildcard Certificate, after vetting your site and ownership the issuance process usually only takes between 1-3 Days, and you will be contacted by the Certificate Authority (CA), shortly after purchasing the certificate with further instruction.

Please note: This product requires you to complete Telephone Verification. If you cannot complete these options, please contact us at support for assistance.

Yes. Wildcard SSL certificates provides strong encryption for a main domain (TDL) and its multiple sub-domains. While purchasing the wildcard SSL, you need to place an asterisk before the domain level that you want to encrypt. This will allow all of its sub-domain variants to automatically be covered, no matter how many sub-domains you add later.

For example, for *.website.com, the wildcard certificate will also cover sub-domains like blog.website.com, support.website.com, or any other.

If your website has a single sub-domain and you don’t intend to add any more, you should use a domain certificate. However, if your website has multiple sub-domains and you want to secure all of them, a wildcard certificate will be a lot more reasonable. A key part of protecting your website from hackers is to ensure that your organisation has been verified and is legitimate. This is why our extended SSL and higher level security certificates require organisational verification.

In simple terms, a CSR or Certificate Signing Request is a small file that contains information regarding the organisation that has applied for an SSL certificate. It is recommended that the customer generates the CSR before ordering the SSL certificate, as once generated, the respective CA or Certification Authority uses the CSR to issue a new SSL server certificate.

A Certificate Signing Request Code is created in a Base-64 Coded PEM Format, which can be accessed by using a text editor wherein the —–BEGIN CERTIFICATE REQUEST—– and —–END CERTIFICATE REQUEST—– tags have to be mentioned.

Generating a CSR or a Certificate Signing Request is a mandatory aspect in the process of obtaining an SSL Certificate. Even though it might be little, this encoded text file has the authority to make your SSL Certificate null and void.

Just keep in mind that while generating a CSR for a Wildcard certificate, the common name must ALWAYS start with an asterisk (*) for example: *.abc.com).

In this way, the Asterisk character (*) – which is sometimes known as a wildcard character –can be utilised for any name later on.

Here’s what you’ll need to do it yourself:

  • Go to the IIS (Internet Information services) manager in your cPanel.
  • Identify and select your current server.
  • Go to the section called server certificates.
  • Complete the prompt to create a certificate request under actions on the right.
  • Fill in your CSR details.
  • Add the encrypted bit length for you SSL provider.
  • Complete and save.
  • The CSR will generate in plain text format. Save it in Notepad.
  • Return to form on the website then copy and paste the CSR.
